What an addicting, deep, intricate hockey team management game. If you like complexity this is the sim for you! This game has a huge learning curve, because the mechanics are so deep. Each player has nine attributes, and six personality traits. Age, size, and pedigree all play a role. Then your team can choose between four offensive tactics, five defensive tactics, four PP tactics, and three PK tactics. You need to train your team in the tactics you want. Your players are good or bad at certain tactics depending on their traits. You also need to decide if your team is going to play offensively or defensively in general. Drafting and player development play a huge role in the higher leagues, and it’s also important to have veteran players on your team to help the young players. This. Game. Is. Deep. The impressive part for me is this is all developed by one guy, who is open to community feedback, and who is actively improving and adding to the game in his spare time. It’s also free unless you choose to donate to his Patreon. It doesn’t help you win, it just gives a few niceties.
There are three different main worlds with amount of game sims run per-day as the difference. Attack worlds has four sims a day. Buzzer (the most popular) has two sims a day. While Cage sims once a day. You get to pick the speed that suits you. There are six different leagues in each world, with 28 teams in each league. The lower leagues allowing you to learn and cut your teeth, with the real challenge happening in the SHL and GHL.
The community is also great. The GPHM Discord is very active, and everyone is willing to help new people learn and do well. I started in the lower leagues, asked a bunch of questions, and have now won two GHL championships in two different game worlds. Over the past 14 months, it’s become my favourite hobby. You can spend hours a day tweaking and researching, or as little as five minutes if you’re busy. You get what you put into it for sure.
