I have been a PC based baseball simulation user ever since the days of Earl Weaver Baseball. My long time favorite used to be Diamond Mind until recently. My new favorite is Digital Diamond Baseball (DDBB) ever since I discovered it by accident back in the version 1.0 days.
I have been one of many users who have created libraries and contributed to the constant improvement of this game. It has grown remarkably over the past few years thanks to the user community and the willingness of the game’s creator to make those improvements. He would be the first to admit the game has not reached its full potential and he is willing to receive suggestions.
The game is a text based simulation with several enhancements such as ballpark images (both real and imaginary) as well as player pictures if the user so desires. The free libraries are created by the community. Most are Major League seasons created using stats from Lahman, Baseball-Reference or Retrosheet data. Some are special libraries such as All-Star, Minor League, Negro League and Japanese League. A small few are esoteric such as College and Movie based. The type of libraries is only limited by the imagination and creation skills of the user community.
As to the playability of the game all I can say is that I’ve had very few complaints as to its playability or the outcomes of my seasonal replays. It probably won’t reproduce an exact duplicate of a season but it usually comes reasonably close. If one replays the same season over a large number times the outcome will probably eventually reproduce the desired outcome but what is the fun of that. Many of us play these games to see if we can alter history.
By the way, DDBB works on PCs and Macs using Java. Don’t let that scare you off as the version of Java running this game is NOT the one hackers were abusing a while ago.
