I’ve been on WebSim hockey since 2014, and I love how much control it gives you in regards to controlling a team. You can adjust surface-level aspects, like the team name, logo, and as of WS3, the colour of your menu bars, but can also get deeper, such as setting lineups, signing free agents, setting practice strategies, organizing revenue sources, arena ticket prices…there’s almost nothing you can’t control. But don’t let that overwhelm you – this game is set up so that if you don’t want to do more than play an interactive fantasy hockey simulator, then you don’t have to. Or, if you loved getting into Eastside Hockey Manager and controlling every single aspect of a team, you have that power as well. You can even create and run your own league as commissioner, or serve on the trade committee, if you want some more control over minute settings.
WebSim has a little bit of everything for the hockey fan, with retro leagues and players, to total virtual simulation, to real players that update at the end of every NHL season. There’s some flaws, of course, as there always will be with user-run programs, and it is subscription-based, which can get expensive if you’re not careful. But if you’re a hockey fan, it’s definitely worth trying out for a season or two.
